Agenda Item #12

Item Title
C-12 Reduction in Weight of "Honors" Courses

Issue/Rationale

-Over the years, concern about the rigor of "Honors" courses compared to AP, IB, Dual Enrollment and AICE courses has been an issue;

-It is the intention of the county to create a tiered approach to higher level courses.  In this model, it is generally recognized that AP, IB, Dual Enrollment and AICE courses are of a higher level and, therefore, should be weighted at a different amount (5.0 for the above mentioned programs and 4.5 for the "Honors" classes);

-With a higher weight value, the desire is to motivate more students to attempt those programs;

-The college system places more emphasis and weight on the AP, IB, Dual Enrollment and AICE programs than "Honors" courses;

-The selection of class awards (such as Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Super Seniors, etc.) and class rankings will be indicative of those students taking the most rigorous courses.

Recommended Action

To place in the Pupil Progression Plan the following policy:

Effective for the 2010-2011 year, all courses designated as "Honors" will be weighted at 4.5 on the course weighting scale for Clay County high schools.  Courses designated as "Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, AICE and IB" will be weighted as 5.0.   Courses taken prior to the 2010-2011 school year that are listed as "Honors" will receive the 5.0 weight when calculating the student's Grade Point Average (GPA) and in any other calculation.
